Instruction on first aid in general:
Introduction to First Aid
3 P’s of First Aid
The unconscious adult
CPR – theoretical and practical training
Recovery position – theoretical and practical training
Choking
Burns
Wounds and bleeding
Fractures
All of the above must be addressed within the context of aircraft operation and the crew complement. It is particularly important to address issues for operations where no cabin crew are carried, including the role of the care-giver and the remaining pilot.
Instruction on the first aid kits that are carried on board the aircraft including:
Their location on the aircraft
Their pre-departure inspections
Their contents and use
Any medication that is carried in FAK must also be addressed eg paracetamol, indigestion remedies, eye wash etc
Location of doctor’s kits and their use
Location and operation of any defibrillators carried on the aircraft
Location and use of portable oxygen bottles
Location and use of therapeutic oxygen points in the cabin
Use of the flight crew oxygen masks for First Aid purposes
Discussion on any air to ground support services relating to medical issues such as Medicare etc as applicable to the operator
Liaison with emergency services, communicating with ATC regarding medical emergencies
Aero-medical topics:
Hypoxia – signs, symptoms and treatment
Hyperventilation – signs, symptoms and treatment
Contamination of the skin/eyes with aviation fuel, hydraulic fluid and any other substances
Hygiene and food poisoning – considerations on purchasing food and storing food on an aircraft intended for consumption during duty
Malaria – with regard to anti-malarial medication
Self-prescribed and over the counter medications – considerations with regard to their use and dosage of medications
